Sexual assault can happen through physical force or threats of force or if the attacker gave the victim drugs or alcohol as part of the assault.Sexual assault includes rape and sexual coercion. If you have been sexually assaulted, it is not your fault, regardless of the circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><b>What does sexual assault include?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any type of sexual contact with someone who cannot consent, such as someone who is underage, has an intellectual disability, or is passed out (such as from drugs or alcohol) or unable to respond (such as from sleeping)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any type of sexual contact with someone who does not consent<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rape<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attempted rape<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual coercion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual contact with a child<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fondling or unwanted touching above or under clothes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual assault can also be verbal, visual, or non-contact. It is anything that forces a person to join in unwanted sexual activities or attention. Other examples can include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voyeurism, or peeping (when someone watches private sexual acts without consent)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exhibitionism (when someone exposes himself or herself in public)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual harassment or threats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forcing someone to pose for sexual pictures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sending someone unwanted texts or \u201csexts\u201d (texting sexual photos or messages)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><b>\u00a0Consent<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">What does \u201cconsent\u201d mean?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consent is a clear \u201cyes\u201d to sexual activity. Not saying \u201cno\u201d does not mean you have given consent. Sexual contact without consent is sexual assault or rape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Your consent means:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know and understand what is going on (you are not unconscious, blacked out, asleep, underage, or have an intellectual disability)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know what you want to do<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are able to say what you want to do or don\u2019t want to do<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are aware that you are giving consent (and are not impaired by alcohol or drugs)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes you cannot give legal consent to sexual activity or contact. <\/span><b>For example, if you are:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Threatened, forced, coerced, or manipulated into agreeing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not physically able to (you are drunk, high, drugged, passed out, or asleep)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not mentally able to (due to illness or disability)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the age of legal consent, which varies by state<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consent is an ongoing process, not a one-time question. If you consent to sexual activity, you can change your mind and choose to stop at any time, even after sexual activity has started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Past consent does not mean future consent. Giving consent in the past to sexual activity does not mean your past consent applies now or in the future. Saying \u201cyes\u201d to a sexual activity is not consent for all types of sexual activity. If you consent to sexual activity, it is only for types of sexual activities that you are comfortable with at that time with that partner. For example, giving consent for kissing does not mean you are giving consent for someone to remove your clothes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>What is NOT considered consent in sexual activity?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Silence.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Just because someone does not say \u201cno\u201d doesn\u2019t mean she is saying \u201cyes.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Sexy clothing, dancing, or flirting.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What a woman or girl wears or how she behaves does not show consent for sexual activity. Only a verbal \u201cyes\u201d means \u201cyes\u201d to sexual activity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Having consented before.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Just because someone said \u201cyes\u201d in the past does not mean she is saying \u201cyes\u201d now. Consent must be part of every sexual activity, every time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Being in a relationship.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Being married, dating, or having sexual contact with someone before does not mean that there is consent now.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Being drunk or high.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Read more about alcohol, drugs, and sexual assault.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Not fighting back.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Not putting up a physical fight does not mean that there is consent.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><b>What steps can I take to be safer in social situations?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are assaulted, or if you find yourself in a situation that feels unsafe, it is not your fault. Sexual assault is never the victim\u2019s fault, no matter what she was wearing, drinking, or doing at the time of the assault. You can\u2019t prevent sexual assault, but you can take steps to be safer around others:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Go to parties or gatherings with friends.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Arrive together, check in with each other, and leave together. Talk about your plans for the evening so that everyone knows what to expect<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Meet first dates or new people in a public place.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Listen to your instincts or \u201cgut feelings.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Many women who are sexually assaulted know the abuser. If you find yourself alone with someone you don\u2019t trust, leave. Don\u2019t worry about hurting someone\u2019s feelings or being disliked. If you feel uncomfortable in any situation for any reason, leave. If the person is preventing you from leaving, try to get someone else\u2019s attention who can help you get to safety. You are the only person who gets to say whether you feel safe<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Look out for your friends, and ask them to look out for you.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can play a powerful role in preventing sexual assault of other people. If a friend seems out of it, seems much too drunk for the amount of alcohol she drank, is acting out of character, or seems too drunk to stay safe in general, get her to a safe place. Ask your friends to do the same for you<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Have a code word with your family and friends that means \u201cCome get me; I need help\u201d or \u201cCall me with a fake emergency\u201d.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Call or text them and use the code word to let them know you need help<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Download an app on your phone.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Search in your phone\u2019s app store for free women\u2019s safety apps you can download and use if you feel unsafe or are threatened.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Be aware of how much you drink.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Research shows that about half of sexual assault victims had been drinking when the attack happened. Drinking alcohol does not make the attack your fault, but alcohol and drugs can make it more likely that you will be drunk or high later on. If you are drunk or high, you cannot consent to sexual activity or you may not understand what is happening<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Keep control of your own drink, because someone could add alcohol or date rape drugs to it<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Get help or leave right away if you feel drunk and haven\u2019t drunk any alcohol or if the effects of alcohol feel stronger than usual.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This can happen if someone put a date rape drug or any kind of drug into your drink. Many drugs have no smell or taste and can cause you to pass out and not remember what happened<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Be aware of your surroundings.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you\u2019re walking alone, don\u2019t wear headphones so you can hear what\u2019s happening around you. Also, as much as you can, stay in busy, well-lit areas, especially at night<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Have a plan to get home.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you plan to use a ride share service from an app, make sure your phone is charged or bring a charger. It can help to have a credit card or cash on hand if you need to leave quickly<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 20px;\"><b style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sexual Assault Effects<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual assault can have long-term health effects. People who have experienced sexual violence or stalking by any person or physical violence by an intimate partner are more likely to report:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor physical and mental health<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritable bowel syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Other health effects can include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe anxiety, stress, or fear<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse of alcohol or drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexually transmitted infections\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-injury or suicide<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting support after a sexual assault can help. You are not alone.
